How to Measure for a Glass Balustrade (Step-by-Step)

Accurate measurements are critical for glass balustrades. Follow our step-by-step guide to measure your project correctly.

Getting accurate measurements is the first step towards a perfect glass balustrade installation. Here's how to measure your project like a professional.

What You'll Need

  • Steel tape measure (minimum 5m)
  • Notepad and pen
  • Camera or phone for photos
  • Spirit level (optional but helpful)

Step 1: Measure the Total Run

Measure the total linear length of your balustrade run. Follow the edge where the glass will be fitted. Include all straight sections.

Tip: Measure in millimetres for precision, then convert to metres for quoting purposes.

Step 2: Count the Corners / Turns

Count every 90-degree change in direction. An L-shaped run has 1 corner/turn. A U-shape has 2. Each corner affects pricing because it requires specialist glass cutting and additional fixings.

Step 2b: Count Openings / Walk Throughs

Note any gaps in the run for steps, gates, or access points. These are breaks in the balustrade where people walk through.

Step 3: Measure the Height

Standard balustrade height is 1100mm for domestic applications. Measure from the finished floor level to the top of where the glass will sit. If you're replacing an existing balustrade, measure the current one.

Step 4: Note the Substrate

What is the glass fixing to?

  • Concrete — ideal, strongest fixing
  • Steel — excellent, may need welded brackets
  • Timber decking — requires reinforcement
  • Brick/block — good, needs core drilling

Step 5: Check for Obstructions

Note any drainpipes, electrical outlets, vents, or other items that might affect where posts or channels can be fixed.

Step 6: Take Photos

Photograph each section of the run, the corners, the substrate, and any obstructions. These are invaluable when we review your project.
